Baby Naming Ceremony

A baby naming ceremony can transcend more than just a "Mi Shebeirach" by the Torah—it can become a meaningful event that gathers extended family and friends to celebrate this special milestone.

Ceremony Ideas

The Cup of Blessing Ceremony Inspired by the Rebbe’s Kos Shel Bracha, this ceremony incorporates heartfelt blessings from attendees:

  • A large glass (similar to an Eliyahu Cup) is placed at the center of the table, surrounded by smaller glasses filled with wine.

  • Guests are invited to share blessings for the child, pouring their wine into the large cup afterward.

  • At the end, the wine-filled cup symbolizes the collective blessings. For baby naming ceremonies, the parents drink from the cup and give the baby a sip.

This meaningful ritual allows everyone to participate, mention Hashem, and share something personal and spiritual. It’s particularly special for events like bar/bat mitzvahs, as it includes and uplifts all attendees, women included.

Additional Touches

  • Parents can fill out a Sefer Torah and Tzivos Hashem form for the child.

  • Recite Birchas Kohanim and personal blessings such as:

    • "May G-d make you like the Matriarchs Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and Leah, who remained committed to Judaism under all circumstances."

    • Highlight qualities of the chosen name, like optimism, kindness, and strength, linking them to our Matriarchs and their values.

For example: "May you, Shoshana, be like Sarah, whose Shabbat candles lit the world with blessings, and like Rebecca, who showed kindness and compassion. Just as Rachel selflessly protected others and Leah persevered with faith, may you embody their qualities. Like a rose that fills the air with fragrance, may you bring light and goodness to all."

Conclude with Birchas Kohanim:

  • "May G-d bless you and guard you. Amen.

May G-d make His countenance shine upon you and be gracious to you. Amen.

May G-d turn His countenance toward you and grant you peace. Amen."
